Mr. Mark Nicholas Cutis joined Abu Dhabi Investment Council in March 2008 to set up “Special Situations” Group.

This de novo unit has focused on investing globally, mainly direct but also in fund format. Focus has been on capturing idiosyncratic exposures with quality counterparties. Team looks for one off transactions which may not fit neatly in any standard asset classification and hence tend to be overlooked .

Portfolio has included exposure to EM banking plays, natural resources, Japanese REITS, capital relief trades for global banks, US subprime mortgages, specialty timber plays, bio pharmaceuticals, South Asian power plants as well as reinsurance during moments of stress. Invested across capital structure to optimize returns and reduce risk. Sensitive to broad long term asset allocation themes as well as identifying suitable partners to lead transactions.

Previously at Shinsei Bank in Tokyo as Chief Investment Officer for 4 years in a more traditional asset allocation role. Before that for five years with HVB/Unicredito in NY and Tokyo. Prior work experience includes a 10 year stint at Merrill Lynch in NY and London in trading, as well as six years with EBRD in London as Treasurer. Have been allocating to alternatives managers since 6/1992

Core expertise is proprietary trading, ALM and asset allocation. Experience includes both direct “hands on management “of risk and risk takers as well as allocating to external managers in alternatives. Experience both on buy side as well as sell side. Worked in NY, London, Frankfurt, Tokyo, Moscow and now Abu Dhabi.

MBA from the Wharton School and a BA in Economics from Emory University. Elected to the Phi Beta Kappa Society. Speaks French and Greek and has a working knowledge of German. Currently studying Japanese and Spanish.
